Married for five years to an abuser. Moved out yesterday to a shelter. No , thank god. All bills and credit cards are in my name and I am deep in debt. My husband would run up charges, not give met the money to pay it down and then make me open up a new card. However, the two houses we bought while we were married are in my husbands name alone. I know this isn't right but I didn't have the strength to argue about it at the time. My husband thinks he'll get the houses and I'll get the debt. Is he right? I have a meeting with a lawyer on Monday, I just can't stop thinking about this.

depends on a lot but What is likely to happen is you will equally split debts and assets. Do you work? Does he work? Have you ever filed a police report about the abuse?

We both work. He makes a LOT more than me. No police report. But I have witnesses.

No police report=no abuse What did he do? Roll his eyes at you? I'm sorry but I have heard many stories of abuse and most don't cut the mustard BUT I do not condone phisical violence.

that's not true If she's in a shelter she more than likely was abused. I never ed the police and was abused for years, doesn't mean it never happened.

In the courts it is the first thing the defendant will bring up, where are the police reports and why did you not the police if it was as bad as you say? Old lawyer tactic...

He put a pillow over my face. That doesn't leave marks so that will be his word against mine. But he shoved my head down on a table in a resturant in front of many people. He has punched, kicked, slapped and bitten me. He forbade me having contact with any of my old friend and won't let me talk to my family unless he is on the other line. I don't need you to believe I'm abused. I know I am and I know I'll be able to prove it if I have to. I just want out.

Why did you not the police then? "He has punched, kicked, slapped and bitten me." And I guess you did not the cops on these ocations either? That will work against you if you mention it/them.
