OT-Has anyone else noticed, or is it just my PC? Have always had a very slloooowww response when clicking on "reload," esp. on this forum. Then this morning, had a little trouble with my login - was logged out (wtf?), happened a couple times more, then stopped. Since then, "reload" is almost immediate - 1-2 seconds max. Did CL fix a bug, or did my PC finally get smart to my behavior?

Too many factors. More than likely it's your (or your company's) internet connection. Could have been your computer doing an anti-virus scan of the whole machine. As I tell my users: "Did you reboot?". Unbelievably rebooting a computer fixes about 95% of the issues.

on rebooting I was in tech support for nine years. I recommend shutting down the computer altogether for ten seconds, then rebooting. not just an instant restart. but yes, it does work wonders.

I've done all that, it's more constant It's my own PC, not at work. I keep anti-virus and spyware on all the time, do a registry fix about 2-3 times a week, run window washer every day, and full anti-virus and spyware scans every day. I have broadband through my cable company. The slowness was encountered only in this forum and others which are very, very busy or which generate many replies to a single thread. Not at all in the slower forums or those where threads count fewer replies. My PC behaves normally and fast in all other actions and browsing. I've done nothing different this morning than any other day. ONly difference is this reload is FAST now. Never was before.

Registry fix I never mess with those registry fixing tools. I did phone support for Microsoft years ago and those type of tools were huge generators. Quite honestly I've never felt the need to do stuff like that. Of course if I think I need to get something out of the registry I just go edit it myself. Turning off the computer completely is a very good idea instead of rebooting. Being in IT things are usually installed on my computer and tested before going on to the computers on the floor. About once a year I wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of windows. That helps out a great deal. For everyday home users I'd say every 2 years you should just backup all data and wipe the slate clean and re-install everything. Yeah it's a hassle but things will run soooo much better afterwards. Of course if that is beyond your technical skills it would be good to enlist someone who has those skills. On thing you might want to do is instead of putting your machine into standby or just logging off, reboot at the end of the day it so it's good to go the next morning.

i've fired techs... ...for reloading a machine instead of getting someone to help them fix it ;-) A wipe and reload might be good for the casual end user but if a professional suggests it it means he doesn't know how to fix your computer.

yup yup there have been a few times I've ed my ISP for some minor problem and gotten a fool on the phone who suggested reloading Windows. I either ask for their supervisor or just hang up and back again. I have yet to need to reinstall Windows for any reason whatsoever.

Depends on the problem. I'm not saying all this to mean just to wipe the slate clean and not troubleshoot it. I do that as the last solution.
